How to Prepare for a Boudoir Photoshoot
No crash dieting necessary.
Every body is boudoir ready, so there’s no reason to crash diet! We don’t want you passing out in the middle of your session. Come as you are, and I promise you’ll feel like the gorgeous goddess you are during our shoot together! My greatest hope is that you will feel empowered and embrace the skin you’re in. Boudoir photography has a way of opening your eyes to the beauty others see when they look at you.
Eat a bite before your shoot!
On that note, eat a little something before you come. As you might imagine, your session will feel like a mini workout (we don’t typically hold those poses for lengths of time). You’ll start to feel alllll the muscles—and you might even be a little sore the next day. So, eat something to sustain you. Try something gentle on the stomach so you don’t feel bubbly during your session. A banana and peanut butter or a slice of toast or granola/protein bar should do the trick. Trust me, you’ll feel better if you do.
Avoid raw veggies before your session because, you know . . . all that fiber does funny things.
Avoid tan lines and spray tans.
The skin you’re in is absolutely gorgeous! No need to get a tan before you come. In fact, your natural skin tone will photograph better than a fake tan. You run the risk of streaks or unevenness if you attempt a spray tan or tanning session before hand.
Try on outfits ahead of time.
I hope you had some fun picking out new lacy lingerie items for your session! You deserve to feel beautiful and confident. However, don’t forget to try your new pieces on before you come (we’ve all experienced the “accuracy” of women’s sizing…).
I’m more than happy to offer wardrobe recommendations based on what typically flatters and photographs well. Every woman has her own unique style, and I encourage you to embrace it! Want to try something a little risqué and out of your normal comfort zone? Don’t be shy and strut your stuff, girl! This is a safe place for that.
Here are a few boudoir outfit ideas to get you going.
Hydrate and moisturize.
Funny enough, drinking plenty of water can prevent bloating and swelling rather than cause it. When you’re dehydrated, your body retains fluid and gets puffy. Hydrating with water leading up to your session and the day of will make your skin glow, prevent tummy troubles, and reduce inflammation. Water is one of the best beauty products you can use! (Although chugging a ton before your session may not be the best idea.) Steady hydration throughout the day will keep things balanced.
Once you hydrate from the inside, boost that glowy skin on the outside by applying lotion (or whatever you use to moisturize) regularly in the time leading up to your session and the day of. Infusing moisture into your skin reduces wrinkles and lines, improves skin tone, and minimizes the appearance of any irregularities.
Avoid alcohol before session.
Unfortunately, if hydration is your goal, alcohol isn’t your friend, at least not right before your session. You may consider skipping it the night before or day of your session. Then, celebrate after with your favorite boozy beverage!
Treat yourself: Wax, Mani / Pedi, Hair & Makeup.
Whether these photos are a gift for yourself or a special someone, you can consider your session self-care. The photoshoot itself is a celebration of that incredible body of yours. Whether you’ve gone through health challenges, physical fitness accomplishments, life milestones, or pregnancy, your body has accomplished some pretty amazing things. Make the most of this occasion by doing it up right with a little TLC and professional hair and makeup.
*However, I recommend against scheduling a facial or wax the day of your session because you may have some residual redness or mild irritation. A treatment a couple days before your session should be just fine.
Wear loose clothing the day of your session.
Dare to go braless the day of your session if possible. Sometimes bra and panty imprints take longer than you’d think to disappear. Avoid those during your photoshoot by wearing loose clothing before your session. (Don’t forget your feet! You don’t want any shoe or sock imprints either.)
Pack boudoir bag with things you might need the night before.
Ok ladies, I’m speaking for all of us here. There’s a *chance* you may be rushing around to get all the things done the day of your session. Make it a stress-free, super fun day by packing your necessities the night before:
- Backup Makeup / Mascara & Lash Supplies / Lipstick
- Hair Supplies (Brush, Styling Tools, Clips/Pins, Comb, Hair Tie, Hairspray)
- Nail Polish for Chips
- Razor
- Lingerie / Outfits
- Water & Snack
- Heels / Jewelry / Accessories
- Safety Pins / Sewing Kit
- Loose Clothing
have fun!
‘Nough said! We’re going to have a great time together. I promise you will be blown away by your boudoir portraits and leave feeling more empowered, confident, and beautiful than ever!
